Context

Medway Pharmacy is an award-winning independent pharmacy on Canterbury Street in Gillingham, Kent, open 100 hours a week. Patients knew it. Google did not.

Between April and June 2026 the website had 30 organic visits from 25 people. Ten a month. The site had the right pages, but almost none of them were being crawled, indexed or linked to.

What the audits foundDetail
Sitemap URLs never crawled45 of 61 marked Discovered, currently not indexed in Google Search Console
Pharmacy First pages not indexed6 of 7 condition pages, and the hub page unknown to Google
Articles with no inbound links10 articles had zero links from other pages, in a crawl of 88 sitemap URLs
Pages competing for one search11 URLs fighting over late-night pharmacy searches
Layout shift on loadHomepage CLS of 0.31, affecting 56 of 58 pages
Competitors holding page oneCoxheath, Chatham, Sturdee Avenue and Osbon pharmacies on pharmacy, Pharmacy First and weight-loss searches

The goal: get the pharmacy in front of the local patients already searching for what it offers, in 90 days, without ads.

The approach

Six workstreams, run in this order. Each one unblocked the next: there is no point publishing content on a site Google will not crawl.

  1. 01
    Audit

Search Console, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog and Lighthouse on all 155 URLs

  2. 02
    Fix the crawl

Sitemap, canonicals, robots, metadata, layout shift

  3. 03
    Rewrite services

Every service page around real search terms and NHS facts

  4. 04
    Publish weekly

Three new articles and three refreshes a week

  5. 05
    Consolidate

One page per search intent, 301 the rest

  6. 06
    Link and measure

Internal link rings, structured data, Search Console review

Technical foundations

July went on making the site crawlable. None of this is visible to a patient, and all of it decides whether Google bothers to read the pages.

IssueFoundFixed
Social preview tags missingOpen Graph image, site name and locale wiped on every page by a metadata merge bugShared tags restored, 1200x630 shopfront image
Titles and descriptions too long20 descriptions over the pixel limit, descriptions on 13 posts collapsing to 23-character stubsClamped to whole sentences under 160 characters, 24 descriptions rewritten
Thin URLs in the sitemap10 blog category and pagination URLs diluting crawl budgetRemoved, self-canonicals on the rest
Duplicate metadata11 blog listing URLs sharing one title and H1Unique metadata per listing
Heading orderA notification banner rendered an h2 above the h1 on 64 URLsOutline now starts at the h1
Heavy images20 images over 100 kB, the largest 659 kB11 recompressed, 1.63 MB saved
Layout shiftA loading spinner replaced the page body, CLS 0.31 on 56 of 58 pagesSpinner removed, CLS 0 on all 58
Structured dataGeneric schema onlyMedicalWebPage, MedicalCondition, FAQPage, Service and Pharmacy schema with GPhC and Companies House links
AI crawlersNo explicit policyGPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot allowed, plus an llms.txt

A weekly content programme

The pharmacists do not have time to write. So we built a drafting pipeline that does the research and first draft, and they do the clinical review and publish.

  1. 01
    Mine real queries

Bottom-of-funnel searches pulled from Search Console, 25 mapped on day one

  2. 02
    Check the gap

Against the topic log, the live site and four local competitors

  3. 03
    Draft

Three new articles, 1,200 words minimum, with FAQs and anchored headings

  4. 04
    Refresh

Three existing articles re-optimised against new query data

  5. 05
    Review and publish

Pharmacist checks every clinical claim in the CMS before it goes live

MonthNew draftsExamples
July9Repeat prescriptions in Gillingham, ear wax removal cost, Mounjaro and Wegovy prices
August6Diabetes testing supplies, sinusitis and sore throat treatment from a pharmacist, blood pressure monitor guide
September9Chest infection antibiotics, impetigo, shingles, thrush treatment, period delay tablets
24 new drafts and 21 refreshes in the window. 20 articles published after pharmacist review.

New hubs with one clear page to rank

Topics with real demand got a dedicated section, so each search has one obvious landing page rather than three blog posts arguing with each other.

HubPagesWhat it covers
Weight loss6Treatments in Gillingham, Mounjaro, Wegovy, a comparison page and a BMI calculator
Over-the-counter medicines12Three categories and eight products with official packshots and FAQs
Pharmacy First8Hub plus seven NHS conditions, each with its own title and description
Local areas5Rainham, Strood, Rochester and Chatham, rebuilt as conversion pages
Late-night pharmacy1Single owner of every late-night and open-now search
Change pharmacy1Replaces a nominate page nobody searched for

Service pages were rewritten too. Seven pages, each around the terms patients type, with six FAQs and corrected claims: Pharmacy First is not always free, you do not need an NHS number, and the 2026/27 flu eligibility rules.

Consolidation: fewer pages, more traffic

The biggest wins came from deleting. When several pages target one search, Google splits the signal and ranks none of them well.

Search intentBeforeAfter
Late-night pharmacy11 URLs competing: homepage, 2 blog posts, 4 area pages and moreOne page. Both posts redirected, late-night copy stripped from area pages
Pharmacy First conditions7 blog twins and 7 service pages. The twins earned 7 clicks from 2,633 impressions in a yearTwins redirected into the service pages, 6 of 7 of which had never been indexed
Change pharmacyA nominate page and a blog post. Nominate searches: none. Change pharmacy searches: about 1,100 impressionsOne page at a URL people actually search
Weight-loss injectionsA blog post never indexed in 2.5 months, competing with the new hubRedirected into the hub

Internal links

A crawl of the 88 sitemap URLs, counting only links inside the body copy, found 10 articles nobody linked to and 26 with one link or none. One article on shingles was completely unknown to Google.

Before, in-body links only
  • 10 articles with zero inbound links
  • 26 articles with one inbound link or none
  • FAQ page unreachable from any service page
  • Area pages not linked from each other
After
  • 0 articles with zero inbound links
  • 2 articles with one inbound link or none
  • Every article links to the next three in its category
  • Every Pharmacy First article links to its condition page

What’s next

NHS Pharmacy First lets pharmacists treat seven common conditions without a GP appointment. Across those seven, there are 6,260 UK searches a month, almost all at keyword difficulty under 10. The pages are built and now have their own titles. The next step is getting them indexed and ranking.
